Defender Bobby Beaumont and midfield duo Vinnie Steels and Sam Wilding have all put pen to paper on one-year deals at the Academy of Light – adding some much needed depth to the Black Cats’ second strong.

Beaumont joins the club from Wrexham, and brings first-team experience as well as a spell as captain of the Welsh Schools’ FA to the fold.

Wilding, meanwhile, spent time on trial with Sunderland last season after being told he would not be handed a new deal at West Brom.

And Steels is also no stranger to the Academy of Light, having previously turned out for the Wearsiders before heading to Darlington, York and ultimately Premier League side Burnley – whom he left over the summer.

Under-23 boss Elliott Dickman was pleased to bolster his squad with some welcome arrivals.

"We had the lads in training before lockdown so we’re fully aware of their capabilities, but it’s nice to add some new faces to the group,” he said.

"Bobby is a good character and he’s willing to learn. He can also play anywhere along the backline, so that’s a big plus for us”

“We had Sam on trial last season and he was really keen to join us. He’s a defensive midfielder that loves to break up play and he’s technically very good.

"Vinnie was with us when he was younger and he’s had a bit of a journey playing men’s football at a young age. He’s a quick, direct winger and we’re really looking forward to working with him.

"They are all welcome additions to the squad ahead of what we hope will be a successful season.”

Further signings are expected before the Premier League 2 season, with the Black Cats’ squad somewhat thin on numbers.

Sunderland remain keen on a deal for striker Will Harris, who was on trial last season, but it is understood the player now has interest from Scotland.

Goalkeeper Nathan Harker remains a name on the club’s radar too.
