Sunderland once again left it late to beat Shrewsbury Town 3-2 at the Stadium of Light.

The Black Cats took a first-half lead after fine strikes from Elliot Embleton and Nathan Broadhead inside the opening 14 minutes.

Yet a disjointed start to the second half saw Shrewsbury draw level after goals from Josh Vela and former Cats defender Tom Flanagan.

Nathan Broadhead then scored a stoppage-time winner when he headed home Jack Clarke's cross.

Here’s how the game played out:

RECAP: Sunderland 3 (Embleton, 4) (Broadhead, 14) (Broadhead, 90+2) Shrewsbury 2 (Vela, 50) (Flanagan, 58)

18’ Pushing for a third

More good work from Cirkin and Jack Clarke who both managed to keep the ball in the Shrewsbury box.

The move eventually came to an end, but the home crowd are already ole-ing their side’s passes.

14’ GOAAAAALLLLL!!!! BROADHEAD!!!

What a start this has been.

Cirkin did well to charge forward and cut in from the right - not quite sure what he was doing in that position.

Anyway, the defender’s shot from the edge of the box was saved by Marosi before Broadhead hammered home the rebound.

Sunderland are in control.

4’ GOAAAALLLLLLL!!!!! EMBLETON!!!

What a hit!

This was Embleton’s chance after being recalled to the side and he’s made the perfect start.

Stewart won a free-kick on the edge of Shrewsbury’s box after Flanagan was penalised for handball.

Broadhead’s effort hit the wall but fell straight to Embleton who struck an excellent shot into the corner.

Sunderland lead.

2’ How Sunderland have started

What to make of that side

So it’s two changes for Sunderland from the side which started at Oxford.

Luke O’Nien and Elliot Embleton are the players who have come in, with Corry Evans and Patrick Roberts dropping to the bench.

It therefore looks like Neil will stick with a back three and wing-backs.

There’s still no Alex Pritchard in the squad after the playmaker missed the Oxford game with a minor calf issue.

This is therefore a big chance for Embleton, who has made an impact off the bench in recent weeks.

Lee Burge has also returned to the matchday squad and is the substitute goalkeeper.
