Sunderland beat Wycombe 2-0 in the League One play-off final at Wembley to win promotion to the Championship.

Elliot Embleton opened the scoring for Alex Neil’s side in the 12th minute with a long-range strike which was too powerful for goalkeeper David Stockdale.

During a tense second half, Sunderland goalkeeper Anothey Patterson also made some important interventions - most notably to deny striker Sam Vokes.

Ross Stewart then doubled his side’s lead ten minutes from time after he was set up by Alex Pritchard.

Here’s how the game played out:

Kevin Phillips on Sky Sports

“These fans won’t let them down. there’s 45 or 46 thousand right behind them. They stood up at the Stadium of Light, they stood up to it at Hillsborough, can they stand up to it today at Wembley when it matters? I feel they can.

“From Wycombe’s point of view, it’s a free-hit, the pressure is off. Sunderland will be the favourites and the neturals out there, we all love an underdog so Sunderland have to take that into consideration as well.

“But, individually, they’ve got big-time players in their squad.”

So it’s one change from the side which faced Sheffield Wednesday last time out, with Elliot Embleton replacing Jack Clarke - who drops to the bench.

Looks like it will still be a 4-2-3-1 formation again with Lynden Gooch at right-back.

Aiden McGeady and Nathan Broadhead are on a very attacking bench.

Wycombe are unchanged from the second leg of their play-off semi-final against MK Dons.
