Tony Mowbray’s side fell a goal behind just before half-time when former Sunderland player Charlie Wyke converted from inside the penalty area.

Mowbray made a tactical change at the break, as Amad came off the bench, and the hosts posed more of an attacking threat.

Elliot Embleton drew the Black Cats level in the 54th minute, before Dennis Cirkin scored the winner 18 minutes from time.

Here’s how the game played out:

What to make of that side

So it’s one change for Sunderland from the side which started at Swansea last weekend.

Cirkin returns to the starting XI in place of the suspended Evans, so it looks like the Black Cats will switch to a back three.

Embleton looks set to play alongside Neil in midfield.

Wigan are unchanged after a 1-0 win over Blackburn on Tuesday.

Former Sunderland players Broadhead, Wyke, Power and McClean all start, while Fletcher is on the bench.

3’ Wide from Roberts

Early chance for Roberts who cuts in from the right and curls an effort wide.

Sunderland fans then bood former player James McClean as the Wigan man went over to take a throw-in.

5’ Embleton shot saved

Another neat move from Sunderland after Embleton played a neat one-two with Pritchard, yet the former’s effort lacked power and was straight at Amos.

This doesn’t look good.

Gooch has gone down off the ball and is now receiving treatment.

Sunderland don’t have another right-back on the bench.

11’ Gooch going to carry on

Bailey Wright was ready to come on and has been told to warm up, yet Gooch is going to try and continue.

Now Wigan captain Darikwa is down.
