Sunderland drew level before half-time, though, with Amad scoring an excellent equaliser following Alex Pritchard’s short free-kick.

The hosts then took the lead midway through the second half when Trai Hume headed home Jack Clarke’s cross.

It means Sunderland will take a lead into Tuesday’s second leg at Kenilworth Road.

So it’s one change for Sunderland following Monday’s 3-0 win at Preston.

Dennis Cirkin misses out with an ankle injury and is replaced in the starting XI by Alex Pritchard.

It looks like Jack Clarke and Patrick Roberts will play as wing-backs, with a back three of Luke O’Nien, Trai Hume and Lynden Gooch.

Luton have made seven changes to their side after resting several senior players against Hull on the final day of the season.

Carlton Morris, Elijah Adebayo, Marvelous Nakamba, Pelly-Ruddock Mpanzu, Cody Drameh, Tom Lockyer, Amari’i Bell and goalkeeper Ethan Horvath have all been recalled.

2’ How Sunderland have started

As expected Sunderland have started with a back three of Hume, O’Nien and Gooch.

Roberts and Clarke are the wing-backs, with Pritchard and Amad supporting Gelhardt.

The atmosphere is buzzing.

Luton’s captain has just gone down forcing a pause in play.

He’ll be able to continue now.

5’ Patterson collects

Luton look like they’ll cross the ball into the box at every opportunity.

Patterson has already been called into action to catch Morris’ header, while the Sunderland keeper also held a cross which came in from the left.

Sunderland are on the front foot here.

They are pushing high up the pitch and going at Luton.

Roberts did well to cut in from the right there before his low shot was palmed away by Horvath.

The rebound didn’t quite drop for Gelhardt.

Luton score from their first corner.

Morris won the first header near the edge of the box, before Patterson made an excellent save to deny Doughty.

Adebayo was alert to convert the rebound, though.

0-1.
