Sunderland were beaten 3-1 by Swansea City at the Stadium of Light.

The Black Cats were reduced to 10 men in the first half when Luke O’Nien was shown a straight red card for a tackle on Ollie Cooper, yet the game remained goalless at half-time.

Swansea took the lead when Joel Piroe opened the scoring five minutes before the interval, yet Dan Neil was able to level the score for Tony Mowbray’s side.

Sunderland weren’t able to hang on though, with Liam Cullen and Cooper both getting on the scoresheet.

Here’s how the game played out:

What to make of that side

So it’s five changes from the Sunderland side which started against Shrewsbury in the FA Cup.

Anthony Patterson, Ross Stewart, Jack Clarke and Lynden Gooch are all back in the starting XI, while Corry Evans also returns to the side.

Alex Bass, Bailey Wright, Edouard Michut, Jewison Bennette and Abdoullah Ba all drop to the bench.

Danny Batth and Leon Dajaku are both back in the squad after missing the game at Shrewsbury.

3’ How Sunderland have started

Sunderland have started with Gooch at left-back and Hume at right-back.

The hosts have made a bright start after Stewart tried to release Clarke on the left but Swansea’s defenders managed to get back.

6’ More pressure from Sunderland

More pressure from Sunderland as Roberts curls a free-kick over the bar.

Moments later Neil tried his luck from distance but Benda made a comfortable save.

Sunderland are pressing high up the pitch when Swansea are trying to play out from the back.

9’ A chance at the other end

That was the first effort at goal from the visitors after Grimes hit the side netting with a long-range effort.

At the other end Stewart was claiming he’d had his shirt pulled by Darling in the box but the referee didn’t seem interested.

18’ RED CARD - O’Nien is sent off!

Sunderland are down to ten men.

O’Nien lunged into a tackle on Cooper near the halfway line with both feet off the ground.

It sparked a melee from both sets of players before the red card was shown.

“You’re not fit to referee,” chant the home fans.

Sunderland also feel they should have been awarded a penalty after Cullen pulled Amad back in the box moments earlier.
