After a pretty uneventful first half, the Black Cats showed more attacking intent after the break.
Patrick Roberts then scored the game’s only goal six minutes from time after cutting in from the right flank.
Here’s how the game played out:

77’ Pritchard up front
It now looks like Pritchard is playing as a false nine ahead of Roberts, with Lihadji moving to the right.
73’ Over from Michut
Big chance for Michut after Neil’s cross was punched away by Lumley, who then collided with his own defender.
The ball dropped to Michut who fired the ball over the bar from inside the box.
Sunderland looked like they were about to make a breakthrough as Roberts’ deflected effort was palmed away by Lumley.
The keeper then got up quickly to deny Alese and turn the ball away for a corner.
Full-backs Alese and Hume are now taking up really advanced and central positions when Sunderland have the ball.
61’ Hume denied
That’s the first real save Reading keeper Lumley has had to make.
Sunderland broke quickly through Roberts after a Reading corner before Hume was released on the left.
The full-back tried to cut inside onto his right foot but Lumley palmed the ball way for a corner.
54’ Over from Alese
For a moment Alese was Sunderland’s most advanced player, as a ball over the top of Reading’s defence found the full-back.
Alese did well to bring the ball under control but hit his effort over the bar.
50’ Chance for Gelhardt
Gelhardt has been quiet so far but that was his first real chance to run through at goal.
The forward ran unto Michut’s pass but dragged a low effort wide after getting ahead of Mbenque.
