LIVE: Sunderland vs Roma

Key Events

  • Sunderland fall to 2-0 defeat to AS Roma in Albufeira
  • SAFC XI: Patterson; Gooch, Winchester, Batth, Cirkin; O’Nien, Matete; Dajaku, Embleton, Diamond; Clarke
  • Subs: Hume, Kelly, Johnson, Ballard, Evans, Roberts, Neil, Carney, Pritchard, Spellman, Taylor, Sohna, Richardson
  • Substitutes Afena-Gyan and Zaniolo with the second-half goals for Jose Mourinho’s side.

After a lively start to the half the momentum has just ebbed a way a bit in the last ten minutes.

A few tired fouls from Sunderland - Roma have made more subs and at this point those fresh legs are showing a bit.

Great move from Sunderland but a loose pass leaves them in back trouble. Zaniolo is through, and Winchester has to just about tear the shirt off his back. Ref opts for yellow.

Two Sunderand subs - Sohna and Taylor on for Cirkin and Embleton.

Now Matete goes into the book for hauling back Bove.

Gooch steps in just as Afena-Gyan gets ready to fire towads the top corner.

Cirkin does well to shepherd the corner out for a throw in.

Lovely that from Clarke, driving to the byline and standing up a cross.

Embo is lurking but Roma are just able to clear the header.

Dajaku dow with a knock, but gets quickly back to his feet. Some good football from both sides in this half.

Roma playing with a lot more intensity in this half, and they’re finding a few gaps as a result.

Volpato cuts inside and shoots - but it’s high and wide in the end.

Should be a Sunderland goal!

Dajaku did brilliantly to work the one on one - but he tries to cut it back across Svilvar who claws it clear.

If he slid that across for Clarke it was 1-0, though you can understand him taking the shot on.

Brilliant, brilliant save

Roma work an excellent overlap and Zalewski bursts into the box.

Fires it across goal, where Patterson does superbly to get a little nick and force it wide. Corner cleared.

Tripi, Bove, Zaniolo, Afena-Gyan and Volpato on.

Anthony Patterson - Next to nothing to do - though was quick off his line to deny Shomurodov. 6

Lynden Gooch - Defensively solid and used the ball well. Not had much chance to get forward. 6

Danny Batth - Been excellent so far, won the vast majority of his headers and made some excellent challenges as well. 8

Carl Winchester - Almost been caught out once or twice but recovered well, and used the ball nicely. Doing a decent job in that unfamiliar left CB role. 6

Dennis Cirkin - As you’d expect, defensively robust and drove forward where he could. 6

Jay Matete - Excellent through the first half hour, breaking the play up and causing a lot of problems with his pressing. 7

Luke O’Nien - A lively display! Has done well, but saw yellow for an absolutely crunching challenge on Shomurodov. After an aerial challenge with Ibanez shortly after, Mourinho was on the pitch and the ref had a quiet word to see him subbed off. Otherwise steady... 5

Jack Diamond - Got into some good attacking positions but just hasn’t been able to make it count yet. 5

Elliot Embleton - Looked really useful, dribbling away from his marker on a few occasions. No killer pass yet, but there’s not much movement in front of him without Stewart. 7

Jack Clarke - One or two flashes of his talent and looks sharp. 6

Leon Dajaku - Pressed willingly but little sight of goal up front. 5

It livened up in the last few minutes there but you can’t say that’s been a particularly eventful half.

Roma have for the most part sat off - three central defenders and two holding midfielders - challenging Sunderland to break them down. That’s a pretty tall order against a Mourinho team.

Mourinho’s side have looked a threat on the break and twice gone very close from set pieces, but they’ve certainly not carved Alex Neil’s team open.
