Sunderland suffered their first defeat of the season as they were beaten 1-0 at Burton Albion in League One

Brewers winger Jonny Smith scored the only goal of the game in the 67th minute at the Pirelli Stadium, while the Black Cats created enough chances to win the contest.

Sunderland defender Tom Flanagan saw a late goal disallowed for offside in a dramatic ending to the match, while new signings Nathan Broadhead came off the bench to make his debut.

Here’s how it all unfolded:

Key Events

39’ What a save from Garratt

37’ Cirkin booked

Burton are starting to cause problems down Sunderland’s left.

First Smith cut in from that flank onto his stronger left foot and his shot was blocked by the head of Doyle.

Moments later, Powell tried to take on Cirkin on Burton’s right and the Sunderland defender was booked for a foul.

Most of Sunderland’s attacks have come down the left but this time they went down the right.

Great hold-up play by Stewart to hold off the defender and release Gooch but the winger’s low shot was comfortably saved.

28’ Great tackle from O’Nien

Both sides have looked vulnerable from their own set-pieces on the counter attack.

This time Burton broke quickly with Akins and Patrick forward in attack.

O’Nien managed to get back to make an excellent tackle in the penalty area.

21’ A chance at the other end

It’s end to end right now.

This time Burton went close as Jonny Smith cut in from the right and his cross deflected into the path of Patrick in the box.

The Burton forward’s deflected effort bobbled wide.

18’ How is it not 1-0?

Another chance as Gooch releases McGeady in the box and the latter flashes his effort wide.

Sunderland are playing some excellent stuff but just haven’t scored.

15’ Getting closer

Stewart has made some excellent runs behind the Burton defence so far.

The striker’s cross from the left found Gooch in the area and the latter’s shot was blocked behind for a corner.

Moments later, Stewart made a run down the right and latched onto Flanagan’s pass but his shot was tame and saved.

12’ Great chance for McGeady

It should be 1-0.

From a Burton throw-in, Sunderland broke quickly as McGeady spun away from his marker on the halfway line and charged through on goal.

The winger tried to chip the ball past Garrett but his shot was saved.

Big chance.
