He showed more than enough in the FA Cup defeat to League Two Mansfield to suggest that he can come into the Sunderland team and have a big impact in the weeks ahead.

This could be positive on two fronts for Phil Parkinson and his Sunderland side.

Firstly, he looked sharp and seems to have particularly good technical ability, meaning Sunderland may have a decent attacking option.

Secondly, Denver Hume, who has done remarkably well this season in making that left side his own, will have looked on at McFadzean’s performance and realised there could be a real challenge to his position in the coming weeks.

This will hopefully give him the reminder that he needs to keep on top of his game, as if there is a drop in his performances then there is genuine quality and balance to come in and replace him.

There’s certainly no doubt that the much-travelled wing-back will be desperate for more of the action and if he is called upon he will be confident after his individual display on Saturday.

It is Fleetwood Town away in the Papa John Trophy (yes it sounds strange) on Tuesday evening and it will be interesting to see if Phil Parkinson gives the majority of Saturday’s team the chance to redeem themselves.

Hopefully it will be much better in terms of performance and result than what we all saw from them on Saturday.
