Sporting Director Kristjaan Speakman says Lee Johnson was the ‘outstanding candidate’ to fill the new brief of Head Coach at Sunderland.

Johnson’s arrival on an initial two-and-a-half year deal was confirmed early on Saturday afternoon, with the former Bristol City boss taking charge immediately for the visit of Wigan Athletic.

Speakman has been appointed with a significant brief, extending from academy development to recruitment.

He will work closely with Johnson and was given autonomy to select him as his preferred candidate.

“The role of our Head Coach is going to be critical in delivering the strategy we have collectively established," Speakman said.

"This aligned approach has enabled us to create a profile for the position and following a rigorous process, I felt Lee was the outstanding candidate.

"I believe he understands the complexities of the project and I’m looking forward to supporting him in his role to bring sustained success to the football club.”
