The Black Cats took an early lead through a deflected effort from captain Max Power, but were pegged back almost immediately by a Cameron Jerome header.

The visitors then edged ahead with a Scott Fraser penalty shortly after the interval, and despite a barrage of late pressure from Phil Parkinson’s men – including a golden opportunity for Will Grigg – were able to hang on for the win.
