The visitors dominated the second half but couldn’t make a breakthrough, before Matthew Pennington opened the scoring for the hosts from a corner.

Sunderland then scored two stoppage-time goals as Ross Stewart and Luke O’Nien turned the match around.

What to make of that side

Alex Bass, Jewison Bennette and Abdouulah Ba come into the starting XI, with Anthony Patterson, Jack Clarke and Ross Stewart dropping to the bench.

Lynden Gooch is back in the squad following a hamstring issue, while it looks like Amad will start up front.

Teenagers Chris Rigg, Ben Middlemas, Tom Watson and Mason Cotcher have all been named on the bench.

Former Sunderland forward Aiden O’Brien starts for Shrewsbury.

2’ How Sunderland have started

4’ Early pressure from Shrewsbury

The hosts have started brightly here and won an early free-kick in the Sunderland half after O’Nien brought down O’Brien.

The set-piece was taken short before being sent into the box and hitting Michut.

There were appeals for handball but noting was given.

Sunderland get away with one there.

Amad tried to receive the ball in his own have but was dispossesed.

Leaahy then tried to chip the ball over the advanced Bass but hit the bar.

Sunderland’s first effort on target sees Michut try his luck from distance but the effrt was comfortable for Marosi.

At the other end Leahy has just headed over from a corner.

15’ Hume pushing forward

When Sunderland have the ball they have switched to a back three of O’Nien, Ballard and Wright, with Hume moving into more of a central position.

So far the visitors have been a little sloppy in possession and been vulnerable to the counter attack.

19’ Roberts booked for diving

The Sunderland bench can’t believe it and Tony Mowbray has his hands on his head.

Roberts is booked for diving after he felt he was brought down by Leahy in the box.

“You’re not fit to referee,” chant the away fans behind the goal.
