The Black Cats took an early lead courtesy of a strike from Aiden McGeady, but were pegged back partway through the first half thanks to a strike from Alex MacDonald.

Grant Leadbitter then restored their advantage shortly before the interval, bundling home from close range after having a penalty initially saved by Gills keeper Jack Bonham.

The result means that Sunderland move up to sixth in League One, having missed out on the opportunity to move up to fifth.
