The Black Cats edged past Swindon Town 1-0 thanks to Charlie Wyke’s second-half header from a brilliant free-kick by Chris Maguire, and then survived a few nervy moments at the end.

The result means Sunderland move up to fourth in the League One table, just five points behind second-placed Hull City with two games in hand.

Portsmouth and Lincoln City both lost this evening, meaning supporters are still hoping of automatic promotion this term.

Here’s a selection of what some have said on Twitter about promotion and the performance:

@JamieJoslyn1: Wasn't a pretty performance but result is all that matters at this stage of the season, 5 points behind 2nd with 2 games in hand looks good. Let's all pray for Charlie Wykes good health #SAFC

@Dan1879_SAFC: Not the best performance but ground out the win and that could be a massive 3 points looking at some of the other results. 2nd place is there for the taking!

@Bodders444: That’s a huge win that mind ... not pretty but will take that between now and the end of the season if it means getting promoted...

@marrs_jordan: I was Wyke’s biggest critic, now it looks like he will be in the Euros squad

@Buntingfootball: Chris Maguire the difference maker in the last two games for Sunderland, the equaliser on Saturday and the assist for the only goal tonight, the ball in tonight for the goal was weighted to perfection. Has stepped up when he's been required
