Josh Scowen seals switch to Sunderland's potential League One promotion rivals

Scowen was available as a free agent after Sunderland opted not to offer him a new contract in the aftermath of their play-off semi final defeat to Lincoln City.

The former Barnsley midfielder was a key part of the Black Cats side last season, registering 51 appearance and three goals across all competitions.

Wycombe Wanderers boss Gareth Ainsworth said Scowen was a player with ‘real Championship pedigree’ and that he will play a ‘big part’ in the campaign ahead.

Scowen is set to link up with his new team-mates on Thursday as the Chairboys begin their pre-season preparations.

“Josh is a player with real Championship pedigree and that’s exactly what we’re looking for here, so I’m delighted to bring him back,” Ainsworth said.

"I was a big admirer of his when I saw him playing in our youth team all those years ago, and it’s been no surprise that he’s made his way up the ladder and spent much of his career in the Championship.

“Wycombe fans will remember Josh as being a real battler in midfield, someone who can win the ball and make things happen for us going forward, and he will play a big part in our efforts to have another successful season.

“There are more signings in the pipeline but it’s great to get this one over the line in time for the start of pre-season training on Thursday, and I’m excited to see him back in the light and dark blue quarters.”

As it stands, Scowen is scheduled to make his Stadium of Light return on August 28th, though there remains some doubt over what division his new team will be playing in.

The EFL are locked in a dispute with Derby County over FFP breaches, and took the unusual step of publishing an interchangeable fixture list.

An independent commission has fined Derby County £100,000, but the EFL are considering an appeal which could lead to a harsher punishment.

As it stands, Ainsworth’s side look like being significant League One rivals for the Black Cats.
