Elliott Dickman named a youthful squad at New Ferens Park, with a number of the club’s academy prospects catching the eye during the 5-1 triumph. And our writer, Mark Donnelly, has dished out his player ratings from the clash – with some high marks for some of the club’s exciting youngsters. 5. Jack Bainbridge - 7
Took his goal well and was his usual commanding self at the back. A solid display. 7 Photo: FRANK REID
6. Michael Collins - 6
Had little to do as Sunderland dominated throughout. Looked good in possession as the Black Cats aimed to play out from the back. 6 Photo: Nick Taylor/Liverpool FC
7. Nathan Greenwood - 7
Showed a real desire to force home the opening goal and was always a willing runner. Perhaps didn't affect the game as much as he would have desired, though. 7 Photo: FRANK REID
8. Owen Gamble - 8
Missed a fine chance in the first half but dictated the play in the midfield. His retention and distribution was sublime. Greater tests will await, but Gamble has shown plenty of promise. 8 Photo: FRANK REID
