Sunderland fell to defeat in their final Papa John’s Trophy group stage fixture – despite a positive first half performance at Fleetwood Town.
Callum McFadzean’s early strike had put the Black Cats in control only for a series of injuries to hamper their flow, allowing the Cod Army to claim a 2-1 win.
But there were still some encouraging performances from a young Sunderland side who really impressed at times.

9. Josh Hawkes
One or two good moments in possession. Pressed very well and stuck to that task with real commitment throughout the contest, which drew plenty of praise from the dugout. 6 Photo: FRANK REID 2020
Superb in the first half, unlucky to hit the post with a fine effort and a constant threat with his excellent set pieces. Tired in the second half, with his side enjoying considerably less possession than they had done in the first. 7 Photo: FRANK REID 2020
Lots of industry as he led a youthful attack through the contest. Couldn’t quite capitalise on some good deliveries into the box. 5 Photo: FRANK REID 2020
Forced off with what looked to be a shoulder injury just five minutes into his debut. Desperate luck for a defender who had made a strong start to the U23 season. N/A Photo: FRANK REID
