John Marquis’ brace and a Marcus Harness strike sentenced the Black Cats to a 3-1 reverse, with Charlie Wyke’s goal a mere consolation as Sunderland – who played out the final minutes with ten men after Luke O’Nien’s dismissal – were comfortably second best.
But did anyone emerge with any credit against Pompey? Scroll down and click through the pages as Phil Smith dishes out his player ratings:
5. Lynden Gooch
Had deservedly kept his place on the right wing after two superb displays, but looked off the pace and spurned some good openings on the ball. 4 Photo: Frank Reid
6. Denver Hume
Was Sunderland’s best performer by a distance, even if he switched off in the build-up to the opening goal. A constant attacking threat and deserved more from the game. 6 Photo: FRANK REID 2019
7. Grant Leadbitter
An uncharacteristic error allowed Portsmouth to take the lead, Harness pouncing on a loose pass to assist John Marquis. Leadbitter has been superb all season but couldn’t exert the same control in the game against a lively and fluid forward line. 5 Photo: FRANK REID 2020
8. Max Power
Had little influence on the game, unable to get into forward areas as he has done in recent weeks. 5 Photo: FRANK REID 2020
