Door opens for Sunderland to make move for striker ‘target’

St Johnstone boss Callum Davidson has confirmed that the Scottish side are ‘moving on’ from Guy Melamed - opening the door for a potential move to Sunderland.

The Black Cats are one of a number of clubs to have been linked with the Israeli striker, who is now a free agent.

Ipswich Town and Portsmouth have also been linked with moves for Melamed, who was offered fresh terms north of the border.

But Davidson has now confirmed that St Johnstone will be moving on from the 28-year-old after talks failed to progress.

Speaking to The Courier, he said: “I think Guy was waiting to see what options were available to him.

“We put an offer to him. It was a ‘wait and see’ but we haven’t heard anything back.

“We’ve got to move on from that as well.

“We made him a really good offer and it was a while ago now – well before the season finished.

“I’ve got to keep moving forward and looking at other strikers who are available.

“Hopefully we can get someone tied up pretty soon and start bringing new faces in.”

Melamed himself also confirmed he would be leaving the club in a post on Instagram.

He wrote: “It’s time to say goodbye. I’m officially leaving St Johnstone and I only have good things to say about the club.

“I was happy to be an important part of the biggest year in the history of the club. Thanks to the gaffer, players and all the staff.

“Finally, fans who might not have been in the stadium but I could feel their support. Come on Saints.”

Sunderland-linked striker subject of FOUR bids

Sunderland were one of a host of clubs linked with a move for Preston North End striker Jayden Stockley in January.

The towering frontman eventually joined Charlton Athletic on loan and went on to net eight times during his time at The Valley.

Stockley is set to leave Preston permanently this summer and the Lancashire Evening Post claim that four League One clubs have already lodged bids for the former Exeter man.

Portsmouth are believed to be leading the chase, while Charlton and Sheffield Wednesday have also registered an interest.

Sunderland ‘close’ to securing goalkeeper deal

Sunderland are close to securing a move for goalkeeper Jacob Carney.

The Manchester United stopper is set to be available on a free transfer.

And the Black Cats are closing in on a deal according to Alan Nixon of The Sun.

Sunderland allowed Remi Matthews to depart the Stadium of Light this summer leaving just Lee Burge and Anthony Patterson as senior goalkeepers.

It was reported by The Sun on Sunday recently that Sunderland had offered the 20-year-old a deal ahead of the summer transfer window.

Both Premier League Burnley and Brighton were also potentially interested in making a move for Carney this summer.

But according to the latest news, Sunderland now look to have won the race for his signature with the Black Cats close to finalising the move.
