Sunderland went top of the League One table after a 3-1 win over Wycombe at the Stadium of Light.

First-half goals from Ross Stewart and Elliot Embleton put Lee Johnson’s side in control against their promotion rivals, who were unbeaten in the league before their visit to Wearside.

Stewart added a second goal seven minutes from time before Wycombe substitute David Wheeler pulled a goal back in stoppage-time.

Here’s how the game played out as the Black Cats claimed all three points.

Getting forward from full-back

38’ Important interception from O’Nien

The hosts have gone direct to striker Sam Vokes from goal kicks and it almost paid off there.

The striker beat Flanagan in the air and Horgan won the second ball before trying to release Mehmeti.

O’Nien read the danger to track back and block the pass.

34’ Winchester’s shot goes wide

The full-back has made a few forays forward on the right and managed to find himself in a shooting position inside the area.

His low shot lacked power and was off target.

30’ Wycombe go close

Sunderland have looked pretty solid since taking a two-goal lead but still look a little vulnerable on their left-hand side.

The home fans were calling for a foul there but Wycombe played on and the ball eventually dropped to Kaikai inside the area whose low shot across goal went wide.

The header, The celebration

What a strike!

Sunderland had started a little slowly but have shown their quality in the last few minutes.

Embleton cut in from the right and has curled an excellent strike past Stockdale to make it 2-0.

Sunderland were just starting to build some pressure as Cirkin’s cross from the ledt was held by the goalkeeper.

Moments later, Embleton broke down the opposite flank and delivered an excellent cross for Stewart to head home.

Sunderland lead.

10’ Patterson gathers

Sunderland appear to have a problem on the left.

This time Mehmeti drifted into the channel and his cross caused confusion in the Sunderland box before Patterson eventually gathered the ball with Kaikai lurking in front of him.

5’ Decent start from Wycombe

The visitors have pinned Sunderland back in the first five minutes and won the first corner of the game.

Wycombe wing-back Kaikai is looking dangerous on the right early on.

As expected, Sunderland have started in a 4-2-3-1 formation with Winchester at right-back.
