The Black Cats fell to a 1-0 defeat against an experienced Stoke side, but there were a number of promising individual displays on the evening as Sunderland pushed for a leveller. Scroll down and click through the pages to see how we rated the performances of the Black Cats – and who will have caught Phil Parkinson’s eye after a standout display:
1. Anthony Patterson
Kept his side in the game with a string of first-half saves. Will no doubt have impressed the watching Phil Parkinson after another mature and commanding display. Didn't put a foot wrong throughout the evening. 9 Photo: Frank Reid
2. Owen Gamble
Stoke focused a lot of their play down Sunderland's right, making it a tough evening for Gamble, but he stood up to the task and put in a good performance. Provided some excellent deliveries going forward too. 7 Photo: FRANK REID
3. Williams Kokolo
Had a limited involvement, and was sacrificed as Sunderland punished for a leveller. 5 Photo: Nick Taylor/Liverpool FC
4. Daniel Neil
The pick of the bunch from an outfield perspective, Neil looked tidy in possession and helped drive the Black Cats forward whenever possible. A really positive showing. 8 Photo: Frank Reid
