A strike early in the second half consigned the Black Cats to defeat, despite creating a number of good opportunities against their top flight opposition. But who shone and struggled in the game? Scroll down to see how our Sunderland AFC writer Phil Smith rated each individual performance – with some positives to take across the board:
5. Denver Hume - 5
Caught out for the opening goal, failing to cut out a through ball. Almost scored early on and tried to get forward whenever possible. 5 Photo: Frank Reid
6. Dylan McGeouch - 7
Quiet in the first half as he looked to protect his defence form the counter. Good in the second, driving his team on and playing some good, incisive passes. 7 Photo: Ian Horrocks
7. Duncan Watmore - 7
Will be frustrated that he couldn’t find the finish to cap a really good display. A constant thorn in the Portugese defence and combined well with Elliot Embleton throughout. Very encouraging. 7 Photo: Ian Horrocks
8. Elliot Embleton - 8
Showed more quality on the ball than any player from either side. Some great passes to find Watmore and seemed to relish a more advanced role. Very impressive. 8 Photo: Ian Horrocks
