Sunderland’s hopes of qualifying for knockout stages of the Premier League Cup were dented after a 3-2 defeat to Wigan Athletic on Monday night.

The young Black Cats fell 2-0 behind after a Kyle Joseph finish and Charlie Jolley penalty but drew level before half-time following goals from trialist Justen Kranthove and Jake Hackett.
Yet it was the visitors who claimed all three points after Alex Perry scored from a corner shortly after the interval.
