Sunderland’s Championship campaign ended in a disappointing 16th-placed finish, meaning the club faces a significant summer rebuild as it prepares to appoint a new head coach.
The squad changed considerably from that which beaten Luton Town at home in the first leg of the play-off semi final at the Stadium of Light one year ago today, with some key figures departing and the club committing even more significantly to it’s youth policy. 29. NECTAR TRIANTIS - LOANED TO HIBERNIAN
This looked like a good call for Triantis to link up with his former boss and get more regular exposure to the physicality of British football. Wasn’t a regular but has played a fair amount and at times in holding midfield, which could be an interesting option for whoever the new head coach may be in pre-season. 30. So what next?
After a broadly positive period of recruitment, the 2023/24 season undoubtedly represented a step back for Sunderland. They were unable to adequately replace Ross Stewart, compounded in the January window when their bid to bring in established options fell short. That may at least offer fans hope that there are plans to address that again this time around. And while some of those other additions may come good in time, the adaption period required showed the importance of bringing in some players with Championship experience who can hit the ground running. On that front, those that Sunderland brought in over the last two windows couldn't get going. It's a huge summer and the pressure is undoubtedly on. | Netflix UK Photo: Neflix UK
