Liam Kinsella scored the only goal of the game for the visitors in the second-round replay, and the Saddlers will now face Bolton in the next round.

But despite the disappointing result, most Sunderland fans weren't too concerned about the defeat, instead wanting their side to focus on the league and Checkatrade Trophy.

Here's how some supporters reacted on social media:

@DavidNunn73: Rather win the Checkatrade anyway...

@johnwoolnough: Poor ... some players not quite good enough. Missed Gooch and McGeady

@peterjames73: Thought we missed McGeady massively tonight. Never looked like scoring or breaking Walsall down for that matter. Walsall front three were a thorn in the safc defence all night.

@phil_browell: Disappointing to lose but Portsmouth dropping points and 3 points on Saturday are more important. Just have to concrentrate on a league and checkatrade double now #SAFC

@jackeriniSAFC: time to focus on tearing up league one and the checkatrade trophy now

@RyanHonour: The treble is off then? :(

@antoneee_: About time we got put out this cup. We were never going to win it. Was only going to affect our league games

@Bunney_91: Not good enough but we’ve bigger fish to fry!

@GrahamNPaterson: Better to lose a game that doesn’t matter than 1 that does, hopefully get info for Charlton Away now #SAFC

@Dan1879_SAFC: It’s shame to be out but it’s good news in the grand scheme of things. Can’t afford many more fixtures having to be rearranged. Also biggest positive of the night - Charlton have done Pompey!!

@dbray65: Out the cup but Pompey losing to Charlton more important to safc season
