Jordan Willis and Arbenit Xhemajli are out for the season, while the game may come too soon for the likes of Denver Hume and Ross Stewart.

Lynden Gooch and Conor McLaughlin could return having missed the weekend win over Rochdale, while Bailey Wright and Tom Flanagan are also nearing a return.

Portsmouth are hopeful of welcoming back key man Michael Jacobs for the clash, after the attacking midfielder missed the last month through injury.

Full-back James Bolton returned to the squad at Northampton on Saturday and could start against the Black Cats, but goalkeeper Alex Bass is out injured for several weeks and will miss the visit of Lee Johnson’s side.

The EFL have confirmed that David Rock will referee the League One clash.

Gareth Viccars and Mark Derrien are the assistant referees, with Craig Hicks – who recently refereed Sunderland’s win at Burton - the fourth official.
