Goals from Grant Leadbitter, Lynden Gooch and Charlie Wyke saw the Black Cats win a game that at times became heated, with Burton having been reduced to ten men in the second half.
Our Sunderland writer Phil Smith has dished out his marks from the match – scroll down and flick through the pages of our picture gallery to see how each player fared:
5. Lynden Gooch
Produced an excellent first-half showing, driving into space and attacking his full-back with relish. His goal was one of simply superb quality. 8 Photo: Frank Reid
6. Max Power
Different class in midfield. Led his side well, battled, moved the ball quickly and was a vocal presence when his side wobbled ever so briefly in the second half. 8 Photo: FRANK REID 2020
7. Grant Leadbitter
Other than one loose pass it is hard to think of a moment where the midfielder erred. Tidied up well, distributed the ball with quality and scored a quite superb first-goal from range. An excellent display. 8 Photo: FRANK REID 2020
8. Jake Vokins
Jonny Smith was Burton’s main outlet throughout the contest and it provided a stern test for the youngster on his return to the side. Did well int he first half but Smith increasingly got on top in the second, leading to a substitution. Got well forward at times and went close with a header. 6 Photo: FRANK REID 2020
