Just ten points separate Shrewsbury Town in 14th from current leaders Rotherham United, who themselves have just a six-point cushion to seventh. There have been a number of surprise packages punching well above their weight, with the big name, established sides not having it all their own way in the race for promotion. Here, Phil Smith picks the players who have caught his eye...
1. DANIEL IVERSEN (ROTHERHAM)
Not a position where there have been outstanding performers, as there were last season when Adam Davies of Barnsley and Jon McLaughlin both excelled. Iversen has put in some eye-catching displays for a side catching form at just the right time. Photo: Pete Norton
2. LUKE O'NIEN
Ipswich Town’s Kane Vincent-Young started the season in sensational form and has established himself as one of the most exciting talents in the football league. Injury has curtailed his progress, while O’Nien has been a model of consistency and tenacity. A wing-back role blend his attacking instincts and defensive commitment well. Photo: Ian Horrocks
3. ROB DICKIE (OXFORD)
Championship clubs are circling one of the outstanding players in the division, who does the basics well but also offers composure and quality in possession. Boasts maturity experience well beyond his years. Photo: Richard Heathcote
4. LUKE WOOLFENDEN (IPSWICH TOWN)
Ipswich Town’s form may have dipped of late but they remain well positioned after their brutal Championship relegation. Key to that was an abundance of early cleen sheets as the 21-year-old formed an effective partnership with the experienced Luke Chambers. Photo: Catherine Ivill
