Phil Parkinson weighing up Ethan Robson recall as he discusses key decision for Sunderland youngster

Robson joined Grimsby Town on loan late in the summer transfer window after injuries curtailed his progress on Wearside.

Jack Ross had hoped that the 23-year-old would push on in pre-season after a successful loan at Dundee last season, but a thigh problem prevented him from competing for a place at the start of the season.

He has made a positive impression at Grimsby, named the League Two PFA fans’ player of the month in September.

The situation has been complicated slightly by the recent departure of manager Michael Jolley, who as it stands has yet to be replaced.

Parkinson has held initial talks with Robson this week as he weighs up the decision, and has also held talks with club legend and loan manager Kevin Ball.

“I spoke to Ethan on Wednesday, we had a good chat on the phone,” Parkinson said.

“I haven’t had a chance to go and see him live yet. We have been watching him, one of scouts has seen him play and I had a good chat with him.

“I said that we would make a decision closer to January, I don’t want to bring him back if he’s not going to be involved because we want him to play games.

“I’ve spoken to Kevin Ball and other members of the staff several times about him and what he’s got to offer,” he added.

“He’s a confident lad and I could tell that from speaking to him.

“He’s enjoyed his time playing at Grimsby and he’s eager to come and play a part at his hometown club.

“We’ll make that decision closer to the time.”

Parkinson is expecting a busy January window, the Black Cats boss said to be in the market for five new additions.

Robson has made fourteen appearances for his boyhood club in all competitions, and is out of contract at the end of the current campaign.
