The Sunderland boss had hoped to make his next addition on Wednesday, but a late injury at the player’s current club has led to a delay.

Parkinson has added Kyle Lafferty to his current squad and also confirmed that he has held talks with Rangers over a potential deal for midfielder Greg Docherty, who shone on loan at Shrewsbury last season.

The Black Cats boss is also in talks with a number of other targets, and a deal is agreed with one that will hopefully be resolved at the start of next week.

Parkinson is not expected any ins or outs before the clash with MK Dons on Saturday.

“Greg is one of a number of players we’ve looked at, and there are plenty of others out there as well,” he said.

“We’re just working through it bit by bit.

“We had a player who was supposed to come up yesterday for a medical but his club picked up a slight injury in training. That’s been put back to Monday but we’re hoping that will be sorted on Monday.

“We’re ready to make our second signing and that changed right at the last minute, but we’re just working towards everything and hopefully we can piece things together to add to what we’ve got.”

Parkinson is confident he will end the month with the additions he needs.

“We’re working towards it but one or two things are just out of our control, like the situation we had on Wednesday,” he said.

“We’ve got to do what we think is right and make the right decisions.

“We’ve got Ethan Robson back from Grimsby, Elliot Embleton back in training next week, two players who add to the squad as well.

“The good thing for me at the moment is that the lads out of the team have been training so well, and that’s been great to see because we haven’t made many changes to the starting XI lately.

“The lads out the team have pushed, driven standards in the last couple of weeks and there’s a lot of those players chomping at the bit for an opportunity.”
