Over 1,000 Sunderland fans predict Championship future in revealing Twitter poll

The Black Cats were last in action against Watford at Vicarage Road and manage to snatch a point following Jewison Bennette’s late equaliser.

That result moved Sunderland up to fifth position in the Championship heading into the international break with 15 points from their opening 10 games despite experiencing managerial change earlier in the campaign.

With that in mind, though, where do Sunderland fans expect the club to finish come the end of the 2022-23 season? The Echo asked supporters on Twitter in an online poll to canvass opinion. Here are our findings:

- Over 1,000 Mackems voted in the poll with 20.3 per cent of people confident that Sunderland could finish between 1st and 6th position.

- 72.2 per cent of supporters predicted that the club will finish between 7th and 14th come the end of the campaign.

- 6.6 per cent of Sunderland fans believe that Tony Mowbray’s men will finish between 15th and 21st this season.

- Just 0.9 per cent of the 1,024 Sunderland fans polled believe the club will finish between 22nd and 24th and be relegated.

What else are fans saying about where Sunderland could finish this season?

@MichaelBowers15: “Lower end of 7th-14th for me. Based on the first 10 games, we have a competitive side but it's still a long season ahead. If we're still in the mix for playoffs after the January window then chances are we're close to 50 points so even if we don't finish there, why not go for it?”

@Lane2ralphlane: “We’ve played most teams in the top 6, honestly think we’ll do it, top 4.”

@andyoots: “We’re an exciting team at the moment- but squad is inexperienced and unbalanced- there will be blips. TM’s sides tend to tail off, although if we strengthen that’ll hopefully be less of a concern. This season was always about consolidation- I’d be delighted with top half. KTF.”
