The Railwaymen have impressed in their first season back in League One, and currently sit 11th having caught the eye with their attractive style of football.

And although glimpses of that were evident when the two sides met at the Stadium of Light earlier this term, it was a game in which Crewe really failed to threaten - with Sunderland dominant while claiming a 1-0 win.

That result and performance has left Artell under no illusions as to the size of the task facing his side when the two teams meet again on Saturday afternoon (3pm kick-off).

But he has called on his players to relish the challenge posed by the in-form Wearsiders.

"Sunderland are one of the best sides we have faced this season, if not the best," said Artell.

"They won 1-0 and the scoreline flattered us because they had a lot of the ball and create good chances.

“We held our hands up on the night and knew that we had been beaten by the better side but I think we have improved since then. We know what to expect in this league a bit more now.

“Sunderland have a big budget and are expected to be up there. I am not moaning, that is just the way it is and we worked hard last year to get games like this. It is just a shame that the fans are not going to be there, because we know how well supported they are.

“We know the pecking order when it comes to finances and resources but on Saturday, it is 11v11 and we have to give as good as we get against a very good side.”

Crewe striker Chris Porter, meanwhile, is targeting what he believes would be a ‘terrific scalp’.

"It is another great game to look forward to and Sunderland expect to be up there for the size of the club,” he added.

"They are a big club who really shouldn’t be in League One but they are and it would be a terrific scalp for us if we could get the three points.”
