'No chance': Gareth Ainsworth makes Sunderland claim following takeover

The Couhig family recently finalised a deal to purchase the Wanderers, and helped to fund the arrivals of Paul Smyth and Rolando Aarons in the summer window.

But Ainsworth is still of the belief that Wycombe - who are topping the third tier after a remarkable start to the campaign - won’t possess the financial muscle of other sides in League One.

Speaking to Dream Team FC Ainsworth said: “This club has been crying out for the Couhigs, and not just finance wise,.

“There’s not going to be millions of pounds available, we’re not going to turn suddenly into the Sunderland’s or Portmouth’s of this world in this league, no chance. We’re going to do it right.

“It’s not going to be overnight, it’s going to take some time. We’ve got a long term plan, we’re just probably going a little bit ahead of the curve at the moment on the pitch. I’m happy with that.”

Meanwhile, League One duo Shrewsbury Town and Bristol Rovers have been charged by the FA with a breach of rule E20 - which concerns clubs failing to control their players.

The pair, and Shrews defender Aaron Pierre, could incur a punishment after an incident in the first half of their clash at the weekend.

“It is alleged that both clubs failed to ensure their players conducted themselves in an orderly fashion and/or refrained from provocative behaviour in the 17th minute of their EFL League One fixture on Saturday 23 November 2019,” read an FA statement.

“It is further alleged that Shrewsbury Town FC failed to ensure its players refrained from violent conduct.

“Shrewsbury Town FC and Bristol Rovers FC have until Friday 29 November 2019 to respond.

“In addition, Shrewsbury Town FC’s Aaron Pierre has been charged with violent conduct following an incident in the 17th minute of the fixture that was not seen by the match officials but caught on video.”
