Most teams are set to return for pre-season training at the start of July as they prepare to play their first friendly matches ahead of the 2021/22 campaign.
Sunderland will play their first pre-season match against Spennymoor Town on Saturday, July 3, when the Euros has reached the quarter-final stage.
The Black Cats will hope they have resolved some contract issues by then, after Aiden McGeady, Charlie Wyke, Luke O’Nien and Denver Hume were all offered new deals but are yet to put pen to paper.
While most players playing at the Euros will be out of Sunderland’s price range, there are some names which could interest the Black Cats.
Here are a couple of players from the tournament who the Wearsiders could target in the coming weeks.
1. Joe Morrell - Wales
While Gareth Bale and Aaron Ramsey often take the headlines for Wales, Luton midfielder Morrell has also been a mainstay for Rob Page's side. The 24-year-old operates in a defensive role which allows the team's attacking players to flourish. Photo: Alberto Lingria - Pool
2. Daniel O'Shaughnessy - Finland
A towering 6 ft 3 centre-back who currently plays for Finish side HJK Helsinki. O'Shaughnessy, 26, is ranked fifth when it comes to aerial duels in the tournament so far and also possesses a threatening long throw. Photo: KIRILL KUDRYAVTSEV
3. Adam Nagy - Hungary
The holding midfielder was signed by Bristol City when Lee Johnson was manager at Ashton Gate. The 26-year-old would need convincing to step down a division but does only have a year left on his contract with the Robins. Photo: Alex Pantling
4. Stephen O'Donnell - Scotland
One of the players who managed to nullify England at Wembley last Friday. The Motherwell defender, 29, was assured in the wing-back role and was unfortunate not to open the scoring when he forced a fine save from Jordan Pickford. Photo: Laurence Griffiths
