Alex Neil’s side took the lead in the 12th minute when Lynden Gooch’s cross was headed home by Jack Clarke.
Coventry saw more of the ball and were able to draw level six minutes from time when striker Viktor Gyokeres fired the ball home from the edge of the box.
Sunderland will now prepare for next weekend’s trip to Bristol City.

9. Jobe Bellingham - 7
Close on a couple of occasions to getting big chances, Ba’s crosses from the right just not quite finding the target. Really good work rate throughout, as was the case right through the team. 7 Photo: Frank Reid
Got stronger as the game went on and was close at the end to making a matchwinning contribution with a couple of those trademark driving runs, but just didn’t quite happen on the day. 6 Photo: Chris Fryatt
Is definitely getting up to speed. Some great touches, almost releasing Jobe with a lovely chipped pass and then Clarke with another clever, first-time lay-off. Feel he needs a striker to bounce off to show his best. 6 Photo: Chris Fryatt
