'Needs to start!': Sunderland fans have this selection plea for Phil Parkinson ahead of Hull City clash
Sunderland fans have urged Phil Parkinson to hand starts to Dan Neil and Will Grigg when the Black Cats face Hull City next weekend – after the duo impressed off the bench against Harrogate Town.
After a limp performance for most the game, a moment of quality from Neil set Grigg free and his fine finish handed Sunderland a narrow victory over the League Two side.
And now fans believe the duo deserve a chance in next week’s Carabao Cup tie.
Here’s what supporters were saying on social media:
@Ian_Crow3 said: “Poor. @WillGrigg salvages win from nowhere and must be starting striker this season, with how woeful Wyke has been. Neil deserve a shot this season, major spark to our side so far. Also thought O'Nien and O'Brien made a difference. But, now onto Hull next”
@buntingfootball added: “Dan Neil when he came on was very sharp, the weight of the pass into Will Grigg was excellent, the way he has played over this pre-season period I wouldn't back against him starting against Hull City in the Carabao Cup next weekend”
@Dan1879_SAFC commented: “Poor performance even if it is pre season. But the massive positive has to be Grigg, he looks sharp and interested. Should be first choice striker now. First time I’ve seen Dan Neil and he looks calm and assured, great assist - got to be pushing to be more involved now”
@darksidemackem suggested: “4231 next week for me. Maguire Neil Gooch behind Grigg”
@lewis_h__ posted: “Never thought I’d say this, but Grigg has to start first game of the season “
@ethanOsafc tweeted: “Dan neil needs to start we need players with pace around the likes of Grigg and Wyke otherwise we will go nowhere”
@JetsSAFC1987 added: “Will Grigg has looked in pre season like the player we thought we'd signed. Grafting aswell!!”
@AL_SNR58 said: “I know that I am stating the obvious here but the subs charged the game. O’Brien was busy. Neil put a great ball through for Grigg to score. I thought Power had a much better 2nd half. Gooch and Maguire were poor today.”
