Sunderland were beaten 1-0 at Middlesbrough in the Championship at the Riverside Stadium.

Boro’s Riley McGree scored the only goal of the game in the 25th minute when he converted Ryan Giles’ low cross.

Sunderland suffered a big injury blow before the match as top scorer Ross Stewart was forced to withdraw from the starting XI due to an injury.

The Black Cats will now prepare for Saturday’s home game against Millwall.

Here’s how the game played out:

RECAP: Middlesbrough 1 (McGree, 25) Sunderland 0

Key Events

  • Sunderland XI: Patterson, O’Nien, Batth, Cirkin (Wright, 75), Gooch (Dajaku, 75), Evans, Neil, Clarke, Pritchard (Embleton, 67), Roberts (Amad,67), Simms
  • Subs: Bass, Alese, Wright, Matete, Embleton, Dajaku, Amad
  • Middlesbrough XI: Roberts, McNair (Dijksteel, 50), Fry, Clarke, Jones, Howson, Mowatt (Bola, 89), Crooks, Giles, McGree (Watmore, 68), Muniz (Smith, 89)
  • Subs: Daniels, Dijksteel, Smith, Bola, McGree, Hoppe, Forss

You have to say it’s been coming.

Giles’ low cross from the left was controlled by McGree, whose touch took him past O’Nien and into an excellent position.

The midfielder then slotted the ball past Patterson.

22’ Patterson saves

While Boro have seen more of the ball, that was the first real save Patterson has had to make.

Howson’s in-swinging free-kick was palmed away by the keeper at the near post before Giles sent the ball back into the box.

McGree then fired his effort over the bar.

17’ Another chance for Muniz

Jones has looked bright down Boro’s right so far and delivered another low cross into the Sunderland box.

Munixz and McGree got in each other’s way before the former scuffed a shot wide.

16’ Wide from Clarke

That was the first time Clarke managed to get forward on Sunderland’s left, up against Jones.

The Black Cats player skewed his shot well wide though.

14’ Sunderland getting pinned back

There is a noticeable difference not having Stewart up front alongside Simms.

Sunderland’s defenders have less players to aim for when they have the ball, while Boro have pinned them back in the early exchanges

7’ Big chance for Sunderland!

That was the best chance so far.

Matt Clake was tackled by Patrick Roberts who then passed to Simms.

The striker then set up Pritchard who curled a shot over from close range.

Boro have looked more dangerous going forward so far.

Roberts’ long ball to the right was missed by Clarke, allowing Jones to run down the right.

His low cross for Muniz was blocked.
