Manchester United were quick to send their best wishes to loanee Amad Diallo following Sunderland's defeat against Luton Town on Tuesday night.

Sunderland were beaten 2-0 by Luton at Kenilworth Road as they were knocked out of the Championship play-offs 3-2 on aggregate – but how did each player fare for Tony Mowbray’s side?

The visitors fell a goal down inside 10 minutes when Hatters defender Gabriel Osho converted from close range following a corner.

Sunderland rallied during a challenging first half but conceded again two minutes before the interval when Tom Lockyer headed home Alfie Doughty’s cross.

Sunderland's defeat means that Amad will almost certainly not be returning to Wearside. The 20-year-old will get a chance to impress Erik ten Hag on the club's pre-season tour and he if is to go out on loan again, it will almost certainly be to a top-tier club.

With Amad now set to return to Manchester United, the attacker posted a lengthy thank you to Sunderland fans on social media, with his parent club also sending their well wishes to their player ahead of his return to Old Trafford.

On Twitter, the Premier League club said: "Commiserations, @AmadDiallo_19. Our on-loan winger suffered a 3-2 aggregate defeat with Sunderland in the Championship play-offs."

Talk now, however, has turned towards the future of Sunderland head coach Tony Mowbray after he admitted his doubts post-Luton Town.

Mowbray is under contract for another year but made a pointed reference to recent reports which have suggested that the Black Cats have been assessing potential alternatives.
