Luke O'Nien sends emotional message to Sunderland fans after incredible European milestone
Luke O'Nien has shared an emotional message with Sunderland supporters after captaining the club to a historic European victory in Portugal.
Sunderland defender Luke O'Nien has reflected on his remarkable journey from League One to Europe after captaining the Black Cats to a historic victory over Torreense in Portugal.
The 31-year-old was handed the captain's armband by Régis Le Bris as Sunderland secured a 2-1 victory in Leiria, coming from behind through goals from Jules Ahoka and Noah Sadiki. O'Nien joined Sunderland from Wycombe Wanderers in 2018, when the club were preparing for their first season in League One. Eight years later, he led them out in European competition.
O'Nien has experienced Sunderland's rise through the divisions first-hand, helping the club secure promotion from League One in 2022 before their return to the Premier League three years later. The defender's latest appearance represented another milestone in that journey, with Sunderland recording their first-ever European away victory.

Reflecting on the occasion on Instagram, O'Nien wrote: "What a night in Portugal! The lads showed unreal commitment to get the win and show everyone why we belong on this stage. To lead this phenomenal club out on a night like this was nothing short of incredible.
“From League One to Europe with the club I love. Moments like this are what we work so hard for in football. To share this experience with my teammates and the travelling fans was special. We keep moving on the big stage. Ha’way the European lads!!" Le Bris' side have now collected six points from their opening two Europa League fixtures, following their earlier victory over AZ Alkmaar.
