Sunderland beat Lincoln 4-0 away on Saturday.

Ahead of the Tuesday night visit of AFC Wimbledon to the Stadium of Light one Sunderland first team player developed signs of Covid-19 on Sunday, a positive test then followed, with a total of eight players missing the game as a result because they had to self-isolate.

Appleton has confirmed as a precaution he will speak with Lincoln City’s medical staff about the potential ramifications.

Speaking after Tuesday’s 1-0 defeat to Shrewsbury Town, Appleton told Lincolnshire Live: “I think we get tested pretty soon.

"The Football League are about to test us.

“I’ll sit down with the medical staff and try and get an understanding of which players it was, then we might have a better understanding,” added the Lincoln City boss.

The Black Cats could have opted to postpone the AFC Wimbledon game on Tuesday night, as Bristol Rovers did following an outbreak of their own.

However, they were told that doing so would lead to an EFL investigation, and a potential sanction.

The club is now waiting on further test results and there is the possibility the training ground may have to close as well.

Sunderland are due to make the trip to Shrewsbury Town on Saturday ahead of the visit of Blackpool next Tuesday evening.

The Black Cats have six games in 18 days over the festive period.
