The Sunday People claim that the investor is part of a group eyeing a takeover of Sunderland, with the Hong Kong-based group renewing their interest in the club having seen a first bid rejected.

And Sunderland fans were quick to react to the news, with many supporters concerned at YU’s link to Carson Yeung, the former St Andrews President who served time in jail for his part in a Hong Kong money laundering scandal.

@Philip_RJ89: “Ambivalent at best, nervous at worst. OK, so it’s still largely ‘Donald Out’. Fine. But is it ‘Donald Out To The First Bidder’? There would be a hell of a lot of questions that would need answering if this is indeed a credible approach.”

@brownh1989: “I’ll believe it when I see it.”

@GlenProctor1988: “The #DonaldOut brigade have a lot to be sorry for us my thoughts!”

@TonyMac257: “As long as he doesn't have close ties to Carsten Yueng.”

@MattCrighton: “Apparently he does. He was part of the team who got Yeung involved in Birmingham City.”

@SafcLamb60: “Let's hope not eh.”
