The Black Cats fell behind four minutes before half-time when they were caught on the counter attack and Josh Laurent converted from close range.
It got much worse for the hosts straight after the interval as Tyrese Campbell scored twice in three minutes to give Alex Neil’s side a commanding lead.
Alex Pritchard managed to pull a goal back, before a brace from Dwight Gayle put the match beyond doubt.
Here’s how Phil Smith rated the Sunderland players at the Stadium of Light:

9. Amad - 4
Played a part in Sunderland's goal but again just couldn't get into the contest. One of many who is labouring as Sunderland's lack of presence to play off is exposed game after game. 4 Photo: Frank Reid

10. Jack Clarke - 4
Had one or two bright moments in the first half as he broke to the byline but little impression on the game as a whole. 4 Photo: Martin Swinney

11. Joe Gelhardt - 4
Started brightly and got into one excellent position in the box, denied by a good block in the Stoke defence. Struggled to hold the ball up thereafter as Sunderland laboured - and was no great surprise when he was withdrawn at the break. 4 Photo: Frank Reid

12. Edouard Michut (sub) - 3
Couldn't make any impact on the game after being introduced after the break. 3 Photo: Frank Reid
