Leeds United boss Daniel Farke sends ominous Sunderland warning with bold Manchester United admission
Sunderland face a difficult Premier League test against Leeds United on Sunday, with Daniel Farke's side heading to Wearside full of confidence following their performance against Manchester United
Sunderland face another difficult Premier League test on Sunday after Leeds United boss Daniel Farke insisted his side should have beaten Manchester United.
Régis Le Bris' side are 19th with four points from seven matches following Sunday's 2-0 defeat at Bournemouth, their fourth successive league loss. Kevin Danso's red card rules him out against Leeds, while Dan Ballard remains injured.
Leeds arrive seventh with ten points after drawing 1-1 with Manchester United. Dominic Calvert-Lewin cancelled out Bryan Mbeumo's opener, but Farke believed his side deserved the win. Sunderland, meanwhile, failed to register a single shot on target at Bournemouth.
"I wanted to win this game and my boys as well. I think you could see this also outside that for that, even in this situation, that we are even a bit disappointed that we didn't win it,” Farke said after the game. "But on the other hand, you have to say it says a lot about what we've done over with the last years that we're right now, even slightly a bit disappointed with a point, just a point against Man United.
"I think we were the better side today, the dominant side. It was not necessary to be in a losing position at half-time, because even in the first half we were very dominant. But it's still Man United, and if you're in one moment not switched on to defend forward and also to spot the run and track the run, then with their quality and Mbeumo they can hurt you, and this is what we did."
That last admission will sound familiar to Sunderland supporters. Individual mistakes and sluggish starts have hurt Le Bris' side repeatedly, most recently when Bournemouth scored after five minutes, and Danso was sent off shortly afterwards. The German also believed Leeds should have scored again.
"I think we lacked a little bit in our decision-making in the first half, so we could have done a bit better and can play it and around the box with a bit more clarity. I think this is what we added in the second half, especially in the beginning: we pushed for the equaliser, fully deserved, a really good equaliser; we had the momentum, completely on our side.
"The problem was there were too many strikes over the crossbar, and too many crosses were then even a bit too long, and this situation killed then a bit our momentum. I think otherwise we would have capitalised even more and we would have won this game."

Farke's view is an ominous one for Sunderland, who have struggled to contain opponents and create enough chances of their own. The German also praised his team's defensive work against Manchester United's dangerous counter-attacks.
Farke added: "We have not allowed anything in the second half and for that many, many compliments to my players for another really good performance, a dominant performance against Man United."
Sunderland face Lech Poznań away on Thursday before hosting Leeds on Sunday, when Le Bris desperately needs a response against in-form visitors.
