The 20-year-old has joined the Black Cats on loan until the end of the current campaign and becomes the club’s second signing of the winter transfer window, following Carl Winchester through the door.

Vokins, who has made two Premier League appearances for the Saints, started their recent game against Arsenal and is highly-regarded on the south coast.

And Johnson says that a shared philosophy between the youngster and Sunderland’s full-backs prompted him to make the move for the youngster.

Speaking to safc.com, the Sunderland head coach said: “Jake is a bright young player, who is clearly rated by Southampton.

"Our full-backs have a similar philosophy to him – defensively and offensively – so we think he will fit in nicely and we are looking forward to working with him.

"We are grateful to Southampton for entrusting us with his development.”

A left-back quickly became a priority for Sunderland in this window after an injury setback for Denver Hume left Callum McFadzean as the club’s only recognised option in that area.

But Vokins’ arrival provides some much-needed competition in a key area of the field.

Johnson is still hopeful of landing two more new signings before the transfer window closes at 11pm on Monday, February 1.

Rangers winger Jordan Jones is likely to arrive, while a striker is also being targeted – which could open the door for Will Grigg to depart on loan.
