Sunderland enjoyed a productive pair of games, the only side to take maximum points from their two fixtures. At the other end of the scale, Southend were the only team not to pick up any points from their games as the pressure begins to mount on Kevin Bond. And the crisis at the bottom of the league worsened, as Phil Smith explains in his power rankings….
21. 4. Ipswich Town (-)
Left it very, very late to edge past AFC Wimbledon after a reasonable draw against Darren Ferguson's Peterborough. Much to Paul Lambert's relief, they have recruited further in recent days and while they are not dominant in games, they look powerful, resilient and will be there or thereabouts. Photo: Stephen Pond
22. 3. Sunderland (+10)
The only side to win both their games, and against tricky opponents too. Dominant in neither game but are starting to get goals from all over the pitch and have lifted the mood considerably. Very positive signs even if there are more gears to go through. Photo: FRANK REID
23. 2. Coventry City (+8)
A quite remarkable show of resilience to fightback from a two-goal deficit and a two-man deficit to rescue a point at Fratton Park. After a comfortable home win over Bristol Rovers, their start has gone from good to very good. Photo: Morgan Harlow
24. 1. Blackpool (-)
Now on their own at the top with four points from their last two. Simon Grayson admitted his side were second best against Oxford, and they had to come back from two-nil down to draw with Gillingham. A sign of problems to be addressed, or a real mental strength that is required in any promotion contender? Time will tell, but for now they can enjoy an excellent opening to the campaign.
