A number of highly-fancied teams came unstuck, but there were some dominant showings nevertheless. In the first installment of a new weekly feature, we take a deeper look at the performances and trends to establish who is on the way up, and who is badly losing momentum. The first leader in our League One power rankings is a side who have spent well and are led by a very familiar face….
13. 6. Rotherham
There are few tougher places to play than AFC Wimbledon so to start so well is testament to the attitude and mental strength that Paul Warne has built at Rotherham. Yes, a late goal was needed to win but it was a deserved one and to get big signing Freddie Ladapo straight off the mark was another boost. Photo: Harriet Lander
14. Shrewsbury
Plenty of summer additions showed their ambition for this season and many backed them for a play-off push. So this was some statement, beating Portsmouth and keeping a clean sheet against one of the most powerful-looking attacks around. A stunning goalline clearance from John Marquis just highlighted what good business it was to pick up Ethan Ebanks-Landell on a free. Photo: Pete Norton
15. 2. Ipswich Town
Paul Lambert gave an extraordinary press conference on the eve of the season, laying bare his frustration with a lack of transfer activity. Was reliant on a young side and so a trip to Burton looked like a major test of character. To come through it was impressive and a boost after such a wretched season last time out. A mightily impressive opening day win from a club that showed its ambition this summer. Yes, set pieces were major factor but it's no fluke. Harry Souttar is a massive threat from the back and Danny Andrew was one of the signings from the summer, incredibly consistent in his consistency of delivery. A statement win on the opening day.
