1. 1999/00 - Chelsea (A) 4-0 loss
A double from future manager Gus Poyet, one apiece from soon-to-be Black Cats flop Tore André Flo and Gianfranco Zola gave Chelsea the win. Sunderland went on to finish 7th in the Premiership.

2. 2000/01 - Arsenal (H) 1-0 win
Patrick Vieira was sent off as a solitary Niall Quinn goal (assisted by Micky Gray) gave Sunderland the win in front of 47,121 spectators at the Stadium of Light. Peter Reid’s side went on to finish 7th again.

3. 2001/02 - Ipswich Town (H) 1-0 win
A 38 minute Kevin Phillips penalty gave Sunderland the win in front of 47,370 at the Stadium of Light. Sunderland narrowly avoided relegation, finishing 17th in the Premiership.
4. 2002/03 - Blackburn Rovers (D) 0-0 draw
Future Sunderland duo Andy Cole and Dwight Yorke started up-front for Blackburn but couldn’t break down Reid’s men. Sunderland were eventually relegated to the Championship in last place.
