Sunderland are preparing for their Championship match against Middlesbrough - and head coach Michael Beale held his pre-match press conference today.

The Black Cats had a busy end to the transfer window and made multiple signings on deadline day, while some players were allowed to leave the club on permanent and loan deals.

Sunderland sit seventh in the table following last weekend's 3-1 win over Stoke, while Middlesbrough are three points behind them in 11th. Here's what was said at the Academy of Light as Beale spoke to the media:

Michael Beale press conference

Speakman on Jack Clarke interest

"Look, we are really proud that we've got a talented group. I think when you have got a talented group you are going to get that backhanded compliment where the phone is going to ring on multiple occasions and people are going to try and prize those players away.

"I think it's a huge success to get through a January window where we haven't lost a player of that calibre. You only have to look at other teams in the league that have lost big players in their squads midway through.

"I think ultimately as well, the lads are really, really happy. I think they enjoy they group and love everything about Sunderland."

Updates to follow...

Beale on deadline day

"Three really good players have come in who were targets for the club. I know the three players well.

"Leo is a player I saw break through in Scotland and he's come down to Leeds. He's highly thought of in his international set-up and gives us real good balance. We think we have signed a really good player there.

"Romaine had a really excellent academy journey with Spurs before going to Standard Liege and has been on the club's radar for a while. He comes in and gives us good versatility in wide areas.

"Callum Styles is an excellent football player who I think will really benefit the club. He's played a number of times for his national team Hungary, will play as a midfielder but can also play as a wing-back or full-back.

"The boys that have gone out, certainly in Ele and Nectar's situation I feel they are players we have really got high hopes for for the future. In terms of Jay he's just missed a lot of footaball and could do with playing."

How relaxed are you about the striker situation?

"Relaxed is a big word for managers when you are chasing and there is the expectation of getting in the play-offs.

Mason played ever so well last week and scored a goal. Naz has done well and I think can also play off the left.

Semedo is a player I think we should have high hopes for in the future and is adjusting to the country. He has had some fitness issues recently carrying one or two knocks that we have had to be wary of, which is why he didn't play in the B team game against Leeds.

"At the weekend we had three different goalscorers so that's a good thing."

Beale on Middlesbrough

"It's an excellent game. If you look at the last six games in the league and the form we're fifth and they are sixth. It's two teams riding high with the same ambition.

"We know what happened in the home game so there is an element of we want to perform well. We will need to as the away team against Middlesbrough who I think are a good team.

"I think Michael Carrick has started his management career well. In the last month at home they've played Aston Villa and narrowly lost and played Chelsea and won the game.

"That's a warning of how good they are are at home but I've seen areas that we can exploit. We will need to be at our best."

Beale on Dan Ballard being on nine yellow cards

"It took him seven or eight games to get that ninth booking. It would be nice if he could go that long again.

"With him and Luke O'Nien being two away, I think the emergence of Jenson has been really positive. Tim Pembele now is fit and has been playing for the second team. Leo has come in and gives us that flexability.

"The reason that Callum's was delayed was because he had an appendicitis, but we expect him back in a couple of weeks as well."

Beale on keeping Jack Clarke

"I never felt at any stage that we were going to lose anybody. The boys all seem really in to what we are doing.

"There was some noise around Jack Clarke but every single day Jack trains ever so well, is focused and seems very happy here."

Beale on Patrick Roberts

"Patrick Roberts will be involved as long as he comes through training on Saturday, so he's ahead of schedule."

That's all of the broadcast sections of the two press conference, but Beale and Speakman have also spoken to the written press - including our reporter Phil Smith.

We'll have more from the pair over on the SAFC section of the Sunderland Echo website, as well as build-up to Sunday's match against Middlesbrough.
