After an even first half, Black Cats midfielder Dan Neil was shown a second yellow card for dissent as the hosts were reduced to 10 men.

Middlesbrough then took full control after their interval as Sam Greenwood and Matt Crooks both scored in the space of three m inutes.

The visitors then added a third when Isaiah Jones broke down the right and converted with a calm finish, before a last-minute goal from Marcus Forss.

8’ Middlesbrough seeing more of the ball

Boro have seen more of the ball so far, with Sunderland dropping into a 4-4-2 system out of possession, with Ba pressing alongside Burstow.

The visitors are taking risks when playing out from the back though, with Ba intercepting a pass near Boro’s goal there.

That was the first effort at goal after Ba cut in from the left and curled an effort over the bar.

There is space for Sunderland to exploit in the final third.

A loose pass from Hume in the Sunderland half allowed Boro to break forward there.

The visitors then worked the ball to Smith on the right whose cross went just beyond Coburn at the back post.

Neil is shown the first yellow card of the match after catching Coburn near the centre circle.

That was the closest we’ve come to a goal so far.

Roberts produced an excellent run to cut in from the right, charging past Engel and Barlaser and into the Boro box.

The winger’s low effort was heading in at the near post but Dieng reacted quickly to save with his foot.

Now Patterson is called into action, just as Sunderland appeared to be taking control.

Greenwood broke down the left and beat Hume who slipped. The Boro man then saw an effort saved by Patterson before Ballard managed to block Cobern’s effort on the line.

Huggins has gone down and is receiving treatment before Middlesbrough take a corner.

The defender is back on his feet but is going to have to come off.

Sunderland had a chance on the counter attack from the Middlesbrough corner there as Burstow charged down the left.

His low cross was cut out.

Now Jones has been booked for bringing down Ba to stop another counter attack.

35’ Neil cross palmed away

The game has opened up in the last few minutes, with Dieng palming Neil’s cross away when Burstow looked ready to head home at the far post.

Hume then curled an effort over the bar from distance.

40’ Sunderland starting to get on top

Sunderland have just started to pose more of a threat with a couple of crosses into the Boro box.

Dieng came under pressure again there but the referee blew his whistle for a foul on the Middlesbrough keeper from Ballard.

Neil was already on a yellow card and has now been sent off for a second yellow for dissent.
